Newborn Photo

Newborn Photo by Visual Impressions Photography

As a mom, I remember the first week home with my new baby being busy, exhausting and full of so much joy I couldn’t contain it.  We will never get these precious first few weeks back, and as busy as this time is, it is the perfect time to schedule a newborn portrait session.

It is amazing how fast those first weeks go by. Even after just two weeks your baby will be so alert and much stronger as they move out of the “newborn” stage and firmly slide into “plump” baby life. You will want to remember this precious time when your daughter or son is so tiny and adorably new.  The best way to hold onto these moments is through photographs.  Trust me, I’ve been there:  “mommy-brain” is real and you will not remember everything!

The best way to make this happen is to book with me before your baby is born. That way we can talk about exactly what you’re looking for and we can settle all the details before fatigue sets in.  Then, after your baby arrives, all you have to do is give me a call and we can schedule a session.  I can even come to your house to take photos!

If you’re pregnant, or know someone who is, give me a call today to talk about newborn photographs.

When to Schedule Professional Portraits

There are so many opportunities to take professional portraits, and some of my favorite are the non-traditional times.  Many people limit this services to yearly highlights, but there are so many more times a year that make for good portrait sessions.

Some typical life events to hire a professional that we all know are:

  • weddings
  • newborns
  • high school seniors
  • annual family portraits
  • birthdays

While these are the most common reasons to commission professional portraits they are not the only reasons.

We have clients come into the studio for many reasons and some of my favorites may surprise you.  Once I photographed a 12-year-old girl and her new pug to celebrate his arrival in the family.  Puppy Love

Bringing pets along for a portrait session, or building a session around a furry friend is a great way to celebrate their role in our lives. Our pets are part of the family and often make family portrait feel complete.

We love to create custom thank you cards and our clients do too. By creating a portrait session following an event –birthdays, weddings, etc.– you benefit from custom images you will get to enjoy for a lifetime as well as a unique way to thank your guests for their attendance. This sweet little girl just celebrated a birthday and wanted a special way to say thank you to her friends and family for sharing in the celebration.

Thank you

Any event in life is worth photographing.  If you want a to capture a time in your life to treasure forever, that is the perfect time to call in a professional.  Whether it’s for newborn portraits or lifestyle pictures the end result will be memories you will never forget and the freedom to enjoy your life while a professional handles the details.

Learning Garden

Verne A Duncan Elementary School builds an outdoor classroom/garden

For those of us with school aged kids we know more than ever what a big role our schools and community play in raising our children. This time of year is ripe with auction procurement and committee meetings by dedicated parents who want to improve their schools and the programs they offer. One such school that is gearing up for an April auction is Verne A Duncan Elementary in Happy Valley, OR. Through a partnership with Visual Impressions, this school benefits from photographic coverage of this ongoing project that their auction will further support.

Because we value our Community Visual Impressions strives to connect with schools and businesses around us. One way we go about doing this is by donating to our local school held auctions. While most auctions don’t happen until March or even April it is important to start thinking how to support your local schools now. Each auction item schools are able to procure, goes into either a silent auction or a live auction–for those oh so coveted items–for parents and community members to bid on. The hope for all of us is to get a good deal on an item but we must not forget that even more important is to remember that the function of this is to raise money for our schools. So you want a beach house for the weekend, you know what it is worth and don’t want to bid past that cap? Try another approach, think “donation” that comes with a pretty cool perk, this will get us all past the initial draw of “whats that worth” and a little closer to doing a great thing for our schools.

Visual Impressions makes it a point to donate to at least 3 local schools in our area of Portland Oregon, by doing so we are creating connections that will continue to support our schools for years to come. Our clients are our neighbors, friends, and sometimes even our family; it is important to remember this as the school we are supporting today might be the school our children attend tomorrow.

If you are interested in donating items to your local school auction please contact your schools PTA or secretary for the person in charge of procurement. I hope everyone enjoys a prosperous auction season and if you need a donation to your school, remember to contact your neighbor, Visual Impressions Photography.

Why should I use a professional or “boutique” photography studio?

“AAAAAH…. Mommy Susie hit me!”Portland photographer

“Did not!”

“Did to!”

“She started it”

Now picture yourself with your two children in a crowded cubicle waiting for what you where hoping for would be a “serene” photograph you could hang on your wall.

It could still happen… except wait, you now have a head ache, your shoulders are tight and you can’t wait to get the kids back to the car but know that if you leave now you will miss your 15 minute photo session with the 16 year old photographer who is at this minute wrestling with a 1 year old in the camera room.

This scenario is one of many my clients share with me when they come for their session at Visual Impressions Photography. I understand that boutique photography is not for everyone and that the price-point many of these chain stores hit appeals to many.

The main difference between what our clients can expect to find with us vs. the chain photographer is the experience.

When you come in for your personal consultation we will determine what kind of photography you are looking for. Whether you want all Black & White images, something funky and colorful or even something traditional, this consultation is going to uncover exactly what your hopes are for your photographs.

The experience you will receive at a boutique studio include:

  • A private portrait session in a quiet studio where you and your children are the focus.
  • No lines – You will find that you won’t have to wait; there are no other distractions and the photographer has everything setup for your session because they know what it is you want. Before you realize it, the session is over and the kids don’t want to leave.
  • Our photographers are prepared for unexpected situations and will provide support to overcome them.
  • Many photographs and poses to choose from
  • Backgrounds created to fit your session and a vast supply of props.

Many parents don’t know what to expect when they go in for a photography session, or realize what they are hoping for as a result. Most can agree though that spending money and time on portraits that don’t meet expectations is frustrating and often times why they postpone additional portraits of the family. I can’t tell you how many people I talk with who had photographs taken of their children at age five and then realized that their children were 15 and 18 and hadn’t had a family portrait for 10 years.

I hope this look into the world of Boutique Photography will mean you don’t let 10 years pass between those family portraits.

Photography is a great industry – there are a lot of great people involved. For those of you interested in a career in photography here is my two cents –
Start by gaining a mentor, someone you can shadow and learn from.
Put in the time to learn the skills you need to be a productive and positive addition to our industry.
It takes time, investment, and passion to live what you love.
It is worth it and you will gain great friends.

Why Choose Custom Photography

Custom Photography as something “special”

Custom photography is more of a luxury than your entry level cookie cutter chain experience.  Custom photography truly is not for everyone, it requires a level of commitment, investment in time  and money, forethought and planning on the part of the subject/client and requires a larger time commitment for the photographer as well.

Clients who enjoy taking a more active role in the creation of their families’ memories have the desire to have portrait art that is truly personalized.  These more discerning clients have been known to budget and allot time for a custom photography session.  Many clients opt for it to be a once a year special experience, some opt to have custom photography sessions done to record their child’s stages in life.  Having said this, it is clear that custom photography is not in everyone’s budget,  it is something that most families save for to splurge on from time to time to memorialize their children as they really are  (not posed and primped in the cookie cutter studio setting).

There is a great deal of time involved in creating high end custom photography sessions for a client.  The luxury of great service, better choices and a supberb end product.  The result of all this are heirloom quality images.  The time invested at the session is only a small portion of time involved in this process.

Custom photography has been likened to purchasing a fine vehicle.  To get to point B from A let’s face it, even a bus ride would suffice.  If you want to luxuriate in a finely appointed vehicle, customizing your own experience by listening to smooth jazz while sitting in a climate controlled setting adjusted purely for your comfort in a body hugging leather interior, perhaps that Lexus you so desire is your cup of tea.  Custom photography is much the same cup of tea.  It is the Lexus of the photography world.  It is where the intangibles make the experience truly wonderful and the images themselves make the investment of money and time truly worthwhile.

Custom photography can be broken down into even more levels.  There are on location, studio, mixed studio/on location, specialty location and destination type photographers.  The beauty of custom photography is in the choices and in the luxury of thoses options.  The customized service level you are sure to experience will be amazing.  The knowledge that your final images are the result of someone caring about those moments so much that they take extra time ensuring that the artwork you receive is good enough to stand by with their name on it.  That level of quality and commitment  is all but lost in the age of “mass produced,” “mass marketed,” corporate “everyone is a number”.  Custom photography is based on being unique to you.  How great an experience would be,  to be able to sit back and allow a photographer to do this highly custom work for images that you will most likely cherish for a lifetime?

Keep in mind more than anything that the Lexus will never appreciate in value the way your portraits will.  The portrait art you become invested in from your custom photographer will no doubt increase in value and become more priceless as the years pass.
